The following pages contain a transcription of a diary kept in 1936 by Fleta Savage of Brock, Texas when she was age 14. Fleta was born in 1921, the third of seven children. She attended school in Brock and graduated in 1938. The diary entries are presented as faithfully as possible to the original, with spelling and phrasing preserved. 1. Fleta’s life in 1936 revolved around family, school, and church in the agricultural area near Brock, TX. I was particularly interested in how hard she worked on her father’s farm fields, from hoeing weeds and pulling cotton bolls to turning watermelon vines.
School was important to Fleta, and she studied hard. Many times, having worked in the fields, she would still study. In those days, basketball was a sport both girls and boys played. I could tell Fleta liked to play and was competitive. April 2nd was an interesting day. Apparently, some girls decided to skip school on April Fool’s Day, but on April 2nd, Fleta said they could hear girls being whipped by Mr. Jones while she was in the study hall. She played volleyball. I think Mr. Jones made his point.
Canning was an important skill, and Fleta mastered it, helping with canning blueberries she had helped pick, as well as other vegetables and fruits. She enjoyed parties. And always took advantage of a party if she could. Fleta’s 1936 Diary’s short passages allow the reader to use their imagination and appreciate those difficult days. Families made the best of the times. Fleta certainly did.
